About Us
Shenandoah Shade Herbals, LLC is an experimental, sustainable center for herbal and plant studies. Our mission is to protect and sustain the environment, as we implement growing practices that allow people a measure of independence in their daily life. Traditionally, herbal medicine has been the medicine of the people. It was kitchen medicine for our ancestors and the founding settlers. We continue that tradition and build community by educating how plants can be both our food and medicine. We as individuals can grow much of our own food and herbs. By growing and using whole plant foods as the source of our health, we can minimize our carbon footprint and reduce our dependency on fossil fuels. This allows our soil, the plants, and ourselves to flourish as God intended.
Our foundational premise is God created us within the ecosphere community, dependent on His plants for health and wholeness. It is in caring for the earth and the plants that we may live a full, authentic life, acknowledging the beauty and intelligence of the Divine creation. We strive to respect and deepen our connection to the sacredness of all life.
Recognizing that we live in crucial times, when we must do more than just acknowledge our interdependency with our natural environment, we are blessed to have stewardship of land in the highlands of Virginia. With woodlands, meadows, and creekside on the property, there is an abundance of wild herbs. In addition, we have planted demonstration raised beds for culinary, tea, and medicinal herbs. In the vegetable garden and the young fruit orchard, we use companion planting, composting, and organic, sustainable growing practices.
In addition to growing and studying the plant world in their midst, Cynthia Kennedy, medicinal herbalist, meets with clients, assessing how plants can improve their health and sense of well-being.
